Which Is Better Before Buying a Used Car?  Mobile Inspector or Shop Mechanic

If you’re buying a used car, a pre-purchase inspection is one of the smartest steps you can take. But buyers often face an important question:

Should you take the vehicle to a repair shop, or use a mobile inspection service that comes to the car?

Mobile Pre-Purchase Inspection vs Repair Shop Inspection

Both options can provide valuable insights, but they work very differently. Understanding the difference can help you choose the option that best protects your investment.

Option 1 - Mobile Pre-Purchase Inspections

Option 2: Repair Shop Pre-Purchase Inspections

Traditional repair shops offer inspections at their location. The vehicle must be brought to the shop for the mechanic to examine it. Advantages of using a mechanic shop includes experienced mechanics, these shops often have lifts and is a good option if the vehicle is nearby.  In speaking to our customers, we have heard about limitations which include scheduling is usually a delay, some sellers are unwilling to take the car to a mechanic shop.  In a competitive market, delays can mean losing the sale to another buyer.

When Mobile Inspections Are Especially Valuable

  • Buying from a private seller

  • Buying a vehicle listed on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist

  • Purchasing a car from another city or state

  • When the seller will not transport the vehicle to a shop

  • When you want a quick independent opinion before committing

  • In these scenarios, having an inspector travel directly to the vehicle can simplify the process significantly.
